A 12-match coupon has 531,441 possible outcomes. That number is intimidating until you realise nobody is trying to cover it — the job is to be more right than the field.
Sort before you pick
Read the whole coupon once and put every match in one of three piles:
- Confident — you would defend this result in an argument.
- Leaning — you have an opinion, but you can see the other side.
- No idea — a coin flip, or a fixture you know nothing about.
Now the ticket writes itself: singles on the first pile, coverage on the third, and judgement on the second.
What is worth checking
- Home and away form separately. A team's overall record hides the fact that many sides are a different team away from home.
- Rest and travel. A midweek continental trip before a Saturday fixture is worth more than most statistics.
- Team news, late. One suspension in defence can change a match; check close to kick-off.
- What the match means. A side safe in mid-table in May is a different proposition to one fighting relegation.
The trap
The most common mistake among experienced players is not bad analysis. It is covering the matches they already understand, because it feels productive, and leaving a single on the fixture they genuinely cannot call. Coverage belongs where the doubt is.
Keep a record
Write down why you picked each result, then look back after settlement. Over a couple of months you will find you are reliably good at some leagues and reliably poor at others. That is worth more than any tipster.
This week's coupon is here, and every settled pool's full results stay public so you can check your own record.
